First we travel to the Côte d’Azur in France Marseilles. The port city is located on the Gulf of Lion, also known as the “Gateway to the Mediterranean”. It doesn’t get much better for fish fans: in the old port of Vieux-Port, the fish are sold immediately after they are caught. Freshness guaranteed. Not far away is the cute old town, which invites you to shop and enjoy. Also highly recommended: a visit to the city’s landmark, the Notre-Dame de la Garde Cathedral. And then you can go back to one of the numerous beaches to relax, for example the Plage du Prophète, which families especially value because of its flat shore and good infrastructure.

First stroll around the old town or spend some time in the sun on one of the beautiful beaches, such as Playa de la Concha or Zurriola? That is the only important question in San Sebastían in the Basque Country. After swimming and watching surfers, you can visit a Pinxtos bar, where guests can sample various regional specialties with local wine.

Let’s stay in Spain and travel by train for about six hours southeast to the country’s second largest city, Barcelona. The modern city with unique architecture has an exciting atmosphere – both day and night. The nearby numerous beach sections invite you to switch off. And from there you can do something straight away in the evening – there are plenty of beach bars.

Split, Croatia

The next Destination that combines beach and city is once again the second largest city in a country – this time Croatia. The historic southern city of Split is known for its Diocletian’s Palace, built in the 4th century. Visitors can still marvel at over 200 buildings in the ruins or have fun in the cafés, shops and bars beneath the courtyards. Split not only offers culture and enjoyment, but also a promenade along the sea, several beaches and the popular Bene lido.

Gdansk, Poland

History again, and not that far away: Gdansk, Poland, is a former Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea. In 1308 it was subordinate to the Teutonic Knights, and from 1454 to the Polish Crown, followed by a Prussian period and its reputation as a free city. Gdańsk has been the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship since 1999; previously the place was seen as the starting point for the democratization of Poland. You can experience culture in the center and in the old town before cooling off in the Baltic Sea or simply enjoying the vastness and idyll of the beautiful beaches.

Tallinn, Estonia

The medieval charm is convincing here: cobbled streets, gates, towers, stone walls and much more can be found in Tallinn, whose old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. You have a particularly good view of the city from Domberg, which you can reach on foot through the old town if you always walk uphill. But it’s not just the city that impresses in Tallinn – Pirita Beach, two kilometers long, is also particularly popular. From here you can not only see the fairytale old town, but also the sailing ships in the Gulf of Finland. For ultimate fun, there are playgrounds, water sports equipment to rent and more.

Lisbon, Portugal

The Portuguese city of Lisbon is the perfect destination to combine city and beach. There are enough sights: the Torre de Belém, the Castelo de São Jorge, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos monastery or the Elevador de Santa Justa, the public elevator that connects the Baixa and Chiado districts. In the Lisbon area you will find several coastal villages and beaches – perfect for relaxing in the sun after sightseeing.
