Why would they want to see it
It’s not easy as parents to know what we can put in front of our children’s eyes. Even less with streaming platforms such as Netflix or Disney+ which offer a lot of content. The worst ? Some programs seem to be suitable… when not at all! This is particularly the case of Destiny: The Winx saga, the second season of which has just been put online by Netflix.
If you grew up in the 2000s or have a little brother/sister, you must know Winx Club, a multi-season animated series centered on Bloom and her friends. Launched in 2004, it was aimed at an audience ranging from 6 to 14 years old.
After seven seasons, its creator Iginio Straffi wants to rejuvenate its audience and reach children from 2 to 5 years old. At the same time, he is developing a live-action adaptation aimed at an older audience who grew up in the 2000s with the fairies of Alféa. His nickname? Destiny: The Winx Saga.
The series follows the initiatory journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a fairy boarding school located in the Other World. It is there that they must learn to master their magical powers, while discovering love, overcoming their rivalries and facing the monsters that threaten to destroy them.
A synopsis that seems harmless on paper, and yet children are not the intended audience at all. We explain why.
Why Destiny: The Winx Saga is not recommended for your children
Not recommended for people under 16 on the platform, Destiny is therefore not the colorful and joyful series that one can imagine. Forget the colorful looks of the fairies in the cartoon, this replay is much darker and more violent (all things considered) than the source material. In the first episodes, the heroine endangers her parents by setting fire to her house. In the second season, she kills the principal of her school in anger.
Destiny: The Winx Saga is a teen series in the era of time. Although it features fairies and magic is one of its main subjects, it mostly tells the story of 16-year-old young women. Its heroine Bloom has a romantic relationship with Sky and sex scenes are not uncommon in the series – they are even too present according to some viewers. Destin also features a trouple made up of Beatrix (the re-reading of the Trix sisters), Riven and a new character named Dane.
While season 1 was centered on learning magic, the second completely forgets this aspect, thus losing its family and good-natured side. There is even talk of bloodthirsty wizards and frightening creatures who come to take away, like leeches, the power of the fairies.
Although it’s a good point that we can only applaud, Destiny: The Winx Saga is also LGBTQ+ friendly. She distances herself from the original material by introducing several queer characters. She even makes Riven a bisexual character while Terra comes out in season 2. A subject that parents will surely not have discussed with their children yet.
