Details about the display and camera: Leaks reveal a lot about the iPhone 12 Pro Max

Two different sources post screenshots of settings that allegedly come from prototypes of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, one leaker even shows one of the devices in a video. The information reveals that Apple has improved the displays and cameras in the new generation of its flagship, in addition to a stronger interior.

In a normal year, almost all the details of the upcoming iPhones would have been known by now and Apple would in principle only confirm them at its September event. But because of the Corona crisis, even the most valuable company in the world has to change its routine and is not expected to present the iPhone 12 series until October. This is probably also the reason why information is only now appearing about prototypes that Apple uses to carry out final tests before the start of mass production.

Two different leakers post screenshots of the device settings, one of them even presenting a prototype in a YouTube video. Photos and video from Max Weinbach and Jon Prosser reveal many interesting details about the camera equipment and display of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The smaller Pro version may also have one or the other feature shown, but the cheaper models are unlikely to have them. Since these are still prototypes, it is also possible that Apple will not implement one or the other function at all this year.

120 Hertz display and lidar sensor

If the devices are genuine, Apple would like to enable a high screen refresh rate of 120 Hertz (Hz) at least for its large Pro model, as is the case with some top Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. And as with the competition, the high frequency should not be a standard in order not to unnecessarily burden the battery. Users can activate them according to the screenshots or let the software determine in which situations the change from 60 to 120 Hz is appropriate.

The camera settings show that Apple wants to become number 1 again when it comes to photography and videos. Like the current iPad Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max most likely has a so-called lidar sensor. According to the settings shown, it can support the autofocus for videos and in night mode and is used for object recognition. As with the tablet, it is probably also used for AR functions.

The prototypes reveal little about the design, as they have a special housing that serves as camouflage. However, according to Jon Prosser, it can be seen that the display edges are somewhat narrower. The notch looks a bit narrower due to the screen that has grown to 6.7 inches, but is ultimately the same size as the current iPhone 11 Pro Max, he writes on Twitter. In addition, the leaker has found that face recognition now works at an even wider angle. And: The already huge camera unit on the back should be ten percent larger.
