Kang Daniel, the K-pop sensation, showcases two distinct personas. At 27, he captivates audiences with dynamic performances, like his latest hit “Electric Shock,” but he can also be found chatting softly from his home in a cozy sweater during a Saturday afternoon Zoom call.
Embarking on his career at just 20, Kang first gained attention by winning the second season of the popular Korean show Produce 101 in 2017, which led to his inclusion in the temporary boy band Wanna One. After enjoying a successful stint with the group for 18 months, he ventured into a solo career, with his dedicated fanbase, now called FLOWD, standing by him from the very beginning.
Since then, Kang has released multiple acclaimed albums within South Korea. He made his acting debut in the 2022 web series Rookie Cops, which was Disney+’s first Korean original series. Additionally, he hosted the immensely popular dance competition show Street Woman Fighter and its spinoffs, Street Dance Girls Fighter and Street Man Fighter.
Currently, Kang is promoting his new EP titled Act, having recently signed with Artistic Round Alliance (ARA) after closing his own agency, Konnect Entertainment, following the embezzlement issues with a key shareholder.
The transition wasn’t smooth for him, but he describes the release of his latest album as a kind of “restart,” allowing him to reconnect with his artistry.
In this interview, Kang shares insights into creating his fifth solo album, his idea of an ideal day off, and his future plans in both music and acting.
In his role as a solo artist, Kang mentions the necessity of acting in his music videos, where he took on dual roles this time, marking a new and enjoyable experience during the filming. He expresses, “The music video is part of my job, but it feels fresh and different this time.”
While watching movies or dramas, he often finds himself thinking about music, even when trying to unwind. His passion for film and series fuels his creativity, contributing significantly to his songwriting process.
“For recharging, everyone has their own methods. Some may prefer exercising or watching films, but for me, just being at home is everything. I have my cats, my computer, and TVs—it’s where I find most comfort.”
“My cats are adorable and bring me endless joy,” he adds.
When it comes to acting opportunities, he expresses a desire to embrace them, admitting he felt nervous shooting Rookie Cops initially, but has since grown more confident and capable.
“Thank you for your kind words,” he laughs. “While I aim to shine on stage and during performances, my goal is to be an artist featured in your playlists, someone whose music you listen to frequently.”
He expresses gratitude towards his fans, noting a recent change in the fandom name, but assures them that their unwavering support allowed him to release this album. “I am committed to evolving and ensuring that my path aligns with your expectations,” he concludes.
