In long-distance traffic, the train already shows you how full a train is, in local traffic there is no such capacity display. That should change now. Deutsche Bahn is introducing real-time occupancy displays on the first routes in regional transport in order to inform passengers about the occupancy of wagons via app, on the vehicle itself and on the platform.
According to a press release, passengers are measured using different techniques depending on the vehicle type, such as counters in the door area or light sensors. First there are pilot routes in Stuttgart and Hamburg.
In Hamburg, the lines S21 and S31 run with the occupancy displays. From February 2023, regional trains RE8, RE80 and RB86 will run between Hamburg and Lübeck. From April, the entire S-Bahn network in the Rhine-Main area will be connected, and in Berlin, a route will also be equipped with this system from May. By the end of 2024, more than 1,500 DB Regio wagons and a quarter of all DB regional trains will be equipped with a system for real-time recording of capacity utilization.
