Devolo Magic 2 LAN gaming set: Aldi offer checked

If there is a wireless dead zone in remote rooms because the router has too little power, the problem can be solved with various tools. Repeaters pass on the data, for example, between routers and devices – like a radio bridge. With every wall and ceiling, however, the strength of the radio signal decreases. Powerline adapters bypass these obstacles by using the power line for data transmission. From February 10, 2022, Aldi’s online shop will have a heavily discounted powerline set: the Devolo Magic 2 LAN gaming set for just under 100 euros. What is the offer?

There are two adapters in the set. Users connect one of them to the router using a LAN cable, the other ends up in any socket in the house. The plugs then connect to each other and send the Internet data over the power line. In theory, the adapters manage up to 2,400 megabits per second (Mbps), but in practice the speed is far lower – also because the performance decreases with the length of the power line and the number of devices plugged into the line . The second adapter has three LAN ports with gigabit speeds (1,000 Mbps), for example for PCs, game consoles and smart televisions. WLAN don’t have the plugs on the box.

In the test by COMPUTER BILD, the Magic 2 series from Devolo has so far been unrivaled in speed – the Magic 2 WiFi Next, for example, managed up to 688 Mbps on the power line. Setup is easy, but operation via the app is not very intuitive due to nested menus. Alternatively, users can change settings via browser menu or desktop software. Shortcoming of the Magic 2 LAN gaming set from Aldi: The adapters do not support WLAN and only connect devices via cable. If you would like to connect smartphones and notebooks wirelessly to the Internet, then you have come to the right place with the WiFi models from Devolo. Everyone else does little wrong with the Aldi set. Warning: Devolo’s Magic series uses the G.hn standard for powerline transmission and is not compatible with many other powerline systems, as most of them use the HomePlug AV standard.
