That was a shot across the bow for Bundesliga promoted Darmstadt: Filip Stojilkovic had no effect after the break in the 3-0 Waterloo in the first round of the DFB Cup against fourth division Homburg.
In the Homburg Waldstadion, Markus Mendler (10th minute), Michael Heilig (49th) and Phil Harres (81st) scored in front of 6150 spectators for the local Saarlanders. The visual superiority was of little use to Lilien coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s favorite eleven because they lacked the necessary creativity to overturn the underdog’s defence.
Swiss Filip Stojilkovic, who came on as a substitute in the 46th minute, was also unable to develop as desired on the offensive. At the start of the knockout competition, Darmstadt were duped by a fourth division team with 0:3. Accordingly, the crashing failure was a fact for the 4th Bundesliga club – Werder Bremen, Bochum and Augsburg had surprisingly lost out.
Nice boost for the sensation
Meanwhile, Homburg is the only fourth division team in the second round of the cup. By progressing, they can count on another good 430,000 euros from the bonus pot of the German Football Association.
