The dissatisfied three from the stands

For the first time, 26 players can be part of each squad at the European Football Championship. However, three per game must be sorted out in advance, which only sit in the stands. A rule of UEFA that the German national players do not like at all.

The German national soccer players find it difficult to understand the UEFA regulations, according to which three of the 26 EURO players have to sit in the stands at the games. “Personally, I find the regulation a bit unfortunate,” said defender Lukas Klostermann before the German team’s European championship kick-off against France on Tuesday in Munich (9 p.m. in the ntv.de live ticker). “I don’t know what’s behind the fact that three have to go into the stands,” remarked the Bundesliga professional from RB Leipzig.

The European association UEFA had allowed all European Championship participants to go to the tournament with 26 instead of the previous 23 players. Above all, this should make it possible to better compensate for failures caused by corona infections. However, a maximum of 23 players are still allowed to play per game. Three players at a time, who can change at each game, then take their seats in the stands.

“As a player you already have that on your screen, you don’t really want to deal with that,” said Klostermann, describing the players’ annoyance about the banishment of three players from the bench. For the coach, too, it was “not an easy decision”, added the 13-time international: “We have to stick to it for better or for worse.”

Against the French, the knee injured Gladbacher Jonas Hofmann and probably also the Munich Leon Goretzka will not sit on the bench. After recovering from a muscle injury, the Bayern professional is still behind in training. National coach Joachim Löw has not yet announced who is the third man for the stands.
