The Diablo franchise’s ugly duckling is a hit for Blizzard as it sees its number of regular players increase for the first time in two years.

Despite repeated criticism around Diablo Immortal, the latest addition to the cult franchise that forged the whole Hack’n’Slash genre made a lot of money for its developer and managed to reach new players.

Indeed, the launch of Diablo Immortal has stemmed the fall in Blizzard user numbers and allowed the company to register a modest increase in monthly active engagement. Still, Activision Blizzard’s latest financial results show that Blizzard’s active users barely grew and revenue remains slightly down on the previous year.

Diablo Immortal allowed its publisher to go back to 27 million users for the quarter ending early July. In March 2022, this number was 22 million. However, the latter has only been falling since the end of 2018. Blizzard was recording 29 million users at the end of 2020, 32 million at the end of 2019, and 35 million at the end of 2018.

The company has really had a crossing of the desert in recent years. Delays that we undergo Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV as well as the many controversies that Activision Blizzard has suffered gave a terribly negative image of society.
