Diablo IV: the name and content of the first expansion leaked ahead of BlizzCon?

Data mining of a test build Diablo IV seems to have spilled the beans as to what we were sure to see during BlizzCon.

From November 3 to 4, Blizzard’s high mass will return in its original format after a year of absence, a 2021 edition exclusively online and a 2020 edition canceled due to the pandemic. With the Activision Blizzard King group having just recently joined the Xbox family, this is an opportunity to get BlizzCon back on track.

Diablo IV will logically be one of the leading figures of this 2023 edition… but the biggest surprise concerning him seems to have been revealed in advance.

Technical leak at Sanctuary

The teams of Diablo IV have in fact recently deployed in their test branch a version 2.0 of the technical alpha build of the game. It did not take long for the data it contains to be scrutinized thanks to the mysteries of IT. The juiciest information concerns what potentially awaits us in the game’s first upcoming expansion.

We already knew it, the teams of Diablo IV seem determined to offer us at least one extension per year. So it’s no surprise that Blizzard saved the announcement of the first of many for the BlizzCon opening ceremony. If you do not want to see the original story being somewhat spoiled, we urge you not to read the rest. With that caveat out of the way, here is what the leaks tell us.

The first expansion of Diablo IV should be called Lord of HatredOr Lord of Hate in the language of Molière. It should thus highlight Mephisto, father of Lilith, central antagonist of the main story. A logical sequel, given the end of the original campaign, on which we will not dwell too much. We can just say that the extension would allow us to survey a new region: Kurast.

Content that will please fans of Diablo II ?

The veterans of Diablo II will recognize in this name the capital of Kehjistan, located east of Sanctuary, beyond the Twin Seas. This is obviously not the only nod made to the legendary title. A system of mercenaries to gain experience and equip could make a return, as well as a system for manufacturing corrupted runes to apply to your equipment.

Extension requires, we should also be entitled to a new class. The leak tells us about class Spiritborn, which could be roughly translated as Child of the Spirits. Its central theme would be nature, like the already existing Druid. Finally, Blizzard could push the MMOesque concept of Diablo IV a little further with the addition of raids.

Although these leaks seem entirely plausible, they should be taken with a grain of salt. There is no doubt that the expansion will be presented in due form at BlizzCon 2023 in a short week. We will then know for certain. Until then, as part of the Season of Blood in full swing at Sanctuary, Americans are invited to donate their blood in the hope of winning a monstrous PC based on RTX 4090 and other goodies, cooled… with human blood.
