The question is not new, but it is relevant again: Should 16-year-olds have the right to vote and stand for election? Now it is clear: the National Council rejects it. On Wednesday, Parliament spoke out against lowering the voting age. This means that the initiative at the national level is finally off the table.

The topic has been discussed for years and has failed again and again. Not just nationally, also cantonally. There is a whole list of failed initiatives, most recently in Bern and Zurich in 2022, others have not yet been dealt with. The issue was only implemented in one canton: in 2007, the Glarus municipality voted to lower the voting age to 16 years.

The right to vote for minors is also being discussed beyond our national borders: Austria and Malta have so far introduced it at the European level. In Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Cuba, 16-year-olds are already allowed to vote.
