With 34 flat chatters in a tour bus through the Midwest of the USA and right in the middle: NDR presenter Yared Dibaba. A special kind of road movie. Three episodes cover 2000 miles through Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Illinois. The metropolises of Minneapolis and Chicago form the start and finish. The group traverses three scenic regions that represent the Midwest. In the first series it is the Great Lakes in the north, in the second series the Great Plains in the west and in the third series the so-called grain belt in the east.

A real adventure for the 34-person tour group. In addition to the world of highways, motels and fast food restaurants, stops are made at locations that stand for the development of America as well as for the decline of the indigenous culture. But above all, the group is on the trail of North German emigrants and will experience what it means when German East Frisians meet American East Frisians.

Minnesota is the state of 10,000 lakes. The first stage leads north from Minneapolis to Lake Itasca. The Old Man River, the Mississippi, has its source there. At the beginning a small river, which then flows 3765 kilometers further as a mighty stream into the Gulf of Mexico. Then it goes to South Dakota in the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, an Indian reservation. From South Dakota it then goes south again to the stage destination Sioux City on the Missouri, the second great river in the USA. In between, Yared visits the legendary Mount Rushmore National Memorial with the four carved heads of US Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, and North German emigrants who have made America their adopted country, for example the Plattschnacker and actor Nick Wilder (“Das Traumschiff”), who lives in the mountains of Montana with his wife Christine.

The second leg leads from Sioux City to the borderlands of Nebraska and Kansas, where many North German emigrants once settled on the prairie in the 19th century. The group visits a region that is still called “Little Oldenburg” and meets Americans who speak Low German. A farm is also visited where rare cattle are bred. And the group experiences how dangerous the life of a mail rider was in the days of the Wild West. In between, Yared enters a so-called sod house, a house made of turf, which served as the first accommodation for many north German emigrants. From the Great Plains it then continues east into the so-called grain belt to Des Moines in Iowa.

The third leg travels from Des Moines, Iowa to the outskirts of the state. Everything revolves around agriculture here. But there is still more to discover in Iowa, for example the most famous quilt shop in the country or the workshop where the first tractor was invented and built, by the way by the German-born John Froehlich. In between, Yared then visits the CLAAS combine harvester factory in Omaha before heading through Illinois to Chicago. The program concludes with the Willis Tower and of course an original Chicago hot dog.
