Did you know ? Firewall is also called “security barrier” in good French

the firewall that you use to browse the Internet safely now has a new official French translation. But “firewall” is still a valid translation.

You also use a firewall to protect your computer when browsing the Internet? Be aware that this very common security tool, like antivirus software, has had a brand new official translation since April 30, 2022: security barrier. It is the commission for the enrichment of the French language which is at the origin of it.

Choice of firewall or security barrier

This new translation, published in the Official Journal, in fact updates the one that had been in force since 1999. At the time, the commission wanted to favor “security barrier” as the main translation of “firewall”. Twenty-three years later, it changes its approach: “security barrier” is still acceptable, but it is no longer the first choice.

It is “firewall” which is now privileged. You have certainly already heard this formulation, which has imposed itself over the years. It had been accepted since 1999, but in the form of an alternative. The use of Internet users, obviously, convinced the commission for the enrichment of the French language that it was time to reflect this state of affairs.

The definition does not change: a firewall is a ” computer device that filters the flow of information between an organization’s internal network and an external network with a view to neutralizing attempts at penetration from the outside and controlling access to the outside “. This description, which prevailed in 1999, is still used in 2022.

In principle, government services are required to follow these transpositions into French, even if English usage makes the use of certain French words counter-intuitive. It’s easy in some cases (“firewall” has gone pretty well in everyday language), less so in others (“indexed cybertoken” will have to hang on to replace “stablecoin”).

And the other terms, then?

  • a killer app or killer application will be called a flagship application;
  • defacement will result in disfigurement;
  • data visualization will be preferred over dataviz or data visualization;
  • data crushing will replace data crunching;
  • the misunderstood computer science ontology will adapt to computer science ontology;
  • rootkit will give pass-right software;
  • data harvesting will replace web harvesting and web scraping;
  • As for application programming interface (API), we will prefer application programming interface (or, at the limit, programming interface).
