Rain World — Against all odds
With a rather mixed reception between the press and the players, Rain World is a platform game released on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch that will delight people looking for a challenge. In this title, Videocult puts us in the shoes of a cat-slug (yes, it’s possible…don’t ask why) who wants to find his family after a devastating flood.
We are immersed in a magnificent 2D world with a very atypical artistic direction that will plunge the most dreamy dreams; but the cruelty of the world will pierce the little bubble that surrounds us. The aesthetics and simplicity of the sets have been largely inspired by classic 16-bit gamesbut the gameplay meanwhile will be the antithesis of what is simplicity.
Through desolate lands with an original ecosystem, you will have to survive by hunting prey, but also by fighting against predators who only want you dead. Unfortunately, your opponents won’t be your only problem, as the world around you is littered with obstacles and pitfalls that can lead to your downfall.
Rain World will once again allow you to take control of a cat through a fundamentally different and much more difficult genre.
Cat Quest I & II — It’s cat-valerie time!
In a completely different universe from Rain World, we have the two episodes of Cat Quest; an open-world role-playing game set in Félingard, a kingdom of cats. The game is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and mobile. The Gentlebros took a rather dangerous side with a very cute artistic direction, with a people of cats as characters giving the feeling that they come from a children’s cartoon. Indeed, the universe is filled with names with adorable connotations; the Purr Flame spell, the Healing Paw or the kingdom of Kit Cat’s. Feline enthusiasts will be able to appreciate this idyllic universe filled with cats and irresistible puns. But what about the gameplay?
This very cute aspect is only a misleading image, because the gameplay will be able to satisfy a good number of players. In effect, your little cat will be able to choose a class; like in any self-respecting MMO, you can become a cat mage or a cat knight. Dodging, thrusting leaps, counter-attacks and magic will be important for your success, because the world around you will not caress you in the direction of the hair.
Who says open world, obviously say exploration and quests; Felingard’s world is full of interesting places and people. Many quests will be offered to you, with inhabitants who are just waiting for you to regulate the customs of their villages.
Black Sad — Step into a feline thriller
Blacksad is a famous detective and animal comic book that shakes up with its “film noir” atmosphere. In 2019 came out an adaptation of the comic “Blacksad: Under the skin” on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch which was received in a very mixed way.
This 3D adventure game immerses us in a sensational thriller where we find the corpse of the owner of a boxing club and the club’s star boxer is found to be mysteriously missing. In order to find the answer to all the questions asked, John Blacksad, the emblematic protagonist of the comic strip, will have to carry out his investigation in the slums of New York.
Applaud for its story, but also for the universe that surrounds the game, the main faults of the game are found in the bugs and the 3D aspect which distorts the comics. However, one of the problems had to be fixed since its release: bug fixes. Even though the game’s art direction may seem a bit daring to fans, Blacksad: Under the Skin is worth checking out for its dark vibe.
