Furiosa: A Mad Max saga is a prologue centered on the youth of the character played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller used two different actresses, who look strangely similar.
In Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagawe discover the dark past of Furiosa, a heroine discovered in Mad Max: Fury Road (played by Charlize Theron in 2015). To play a younger Furiosa, director George Miller set his sights on Anya Taylor-Joy, the film’s lead. He actually went back very far in the character’s life, which forced him to take on a second, even younger actress. Her name ? Alyla Browne.
We see a lot of Alyla Browne in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and her acting is particularly convincing. There is, however, one point that may have jumped out at you when watching the film: her uncanny resemblance to Anya Taylor-Joy. This is not the result of chance, even less of lucky casting: George Miller called on artificial intelligence to make the illusion work, indicates Variety in an article published on May 26.
George Miller used AI for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
When you look at photos of Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne, you realize that their faces don’t have much in common. So George Miller had to “cheat”. This is what Anya Taylor-Joy revealed during an interview with The Kelly Clarkson Show. She explains : ” George Miller had the idea early on. The public had to get used to a new Furiosa [par rapport à Charlize Theron dans Fury Road]. He wanted the transition between the two actresses who play her to be as smooth as possible. »
“ So I spent two days doing stuff you can’t imagine. And they mixed our two faces », adds Anya Taylor-Joy. Her appearance becomes more and more important as Alyla Browne progresses through the story and prepares to pass the torch. We go from 35 to 80%, the fluidity sought by George Miller so that the transition between Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy is not too brutal.
George Miller called on three special effects companies to Furiosa: A Mad Max saga, in this case DNEG, Framestore and Metaphysic AI. The latter specializes in the generation of content using AI, in particular “realistic” deepfakes and even morphing.
Anya Taylor-Joy still wants to recall the importance of transparency when using these techniques which can cause debate. “ Our industry did not go on strike for nothing. It is [l’IA ] something frightening, and if it is used, then it must be honest and always consensual. Lack of consent, in any area of life, is scary », she concludes.
