Difficult conditions – search operation in Styria: Alpinist missing

An alpinist has been missing in the Grimmings area (Liezen district) in Styria since Sunday: the search had to be called off in the evening due to weather conditions.

A total of five mountain rescue teams were involved in the search for a missing alpinist on Sunday. The Alpine police, a police helicopter and the avalanche and search dog squad also supported the action on Grimming. However, heavy snowfall and wind gusts of up to 80 km/h pose enormous challenges for the helpers. Elaborate search operationThe police helicopter managed to carry out a structured overflight over the extensive search area in impassable and alpine terrain under extremely challenging conditions using the RECCO SAR system. With this technology it is possible to locate people who are wearing a RECCO reflector or who are carrying it with them in their equipment. This technology was also used by the search teams on the ground. Unfortunately, so far in vain. The search operation had to be stopped around 9 p.m. – the risk of avalanches was simply too high with 1.5 meters of fresh snow and strong winds. Missing since Friday The missing person is a Styrian who set off on a mountain tour on Thursday. Since he did not show up for an appointment in Graz on Friday, a police report was filed. His car was found on Saturday evening at the Grimming/Tressenstein parking lot. A briefing is currently underway to determine whether and when the search operation will continue. The plan is for a helicopter crew to check the bivouac box on Grimming and the summit book to see whether the missing person has registered there.
