Difficult mission – alpine hut burned down above Lake Millstatt

Carinthia’s fire brigades were particularly challenged on Monday. While the Spittal, Gmünd and Trebesing fire brigades were in action at the Katschberg tunnel into the evening hours, fire brigades in the Millstätter See region had to move towards the Schwaigerhütte. An alpine hut, the so-called Weinzierlhütte, had started to burn near the well-known Schwaigerhütte. When the emergency services arrived, the hut was already on fire. You could only let them burn down in a controlled manner and prevent the flames from spreading to the forest.

Eight fire brigades in the Millstätter See region were on duty until late after midnight on Monday evening near the Schwaigerhütte at more than 1,600 meters above sea level. “The extinguishing water supply was very difficult. We always had to go down to the toll station with the tanker to fetch water from the stream, ”reported operations manager Hannes Zeber. A mile-long hose line had to be laid. The hut could only be burned down in a controlled manner. The flames had to be prevented from spreading to the forest. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
