Five alarm calls in one night – after 180 cases in two and a half years: the Wattens fire brigade in Tyrol cannot rest because of a sick woman. There is no solution in sight, the burden on the emergency services is and remains enormous.
A month ago, the “Krone” showed the constant annoyance in Wattens. Now it started again on Wednesday night. The first emergency call came at 3:15 a.m., the fifth and last came at around 8:30 a.m. As has been the case so often since 2021, a mentally impaired and apparently drug-addicted woman dialed the emergency call because she wanted to have noticed a fire. Again, the spook around the apartment building was quickly over – false alarm! Whole settlement suffers “But we have no choice but to check every time. With a small team, but it is very stressful. Because we don’t have shift work with the volunteer fire brigade, we have to work the next day,” says fire brigade commander Martin Schrott, describing the unacceptable situation. The police and the Red Cross also repeatedly turn out in vain. Only rarely does the caller let the control center employee calm her down. After being admitted soon back to the house, according to Schrott, the woman was admitted to the Hall hospital after the latest alarms. But in the absence of any real danger or threat that emanates from her, she must be released again soon. Solutions were discussed with the police, control center and state fire service inspector Alfons Gruber, among others, but so far in vain. “We’re at our wits end,” says Schrott. More troubled times are imminent!
