Dimensity 9000+: MediaTek’s weapon to compete with Qualcomm and its Snapdragon 8+ Gen1

MediaTek boosts the CPU frequency of its Dimensity 9000 to give birth to a Dimensity 9000+. The promise: 5% more CPU performance and 10% more GPU performance. Always good to take, even if the Dimenisty 9000 was already a monster of power.

In November 2021, MediaTek was attacking the high-end segment with its Dimensity 9000. In line with what Qualcomm did last month with its Snapdragon 8 Gen1, by drawing a Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 with higher frequencies, MediaTek formalizes the Dimensity 9000+. The Taiwanese firm uses the same proven recipe from its competitor. So the Dimensity 9000+ is essentially a faster Dimensity 9000.

MediaTek’s response to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen1

The SoC Dimensity 9000+ remains engraved in 4 nm by TSMC. It still mobilizes one Cortex-X2 core, three Cortex-A710 cores and four Cortex-A510 cores. Simply, the frequency of the Cortex-X2 performance core, capped at 3.05 GHz for the Dimensity 9000, is now clocked at 3.2 GHz. The Cortex-A710 cores have a frequency of 2.85 GHz, like those of the Dimensity 9000. MediaTek claims an overall CPU performance gain of 5%.

For the GPU part, the performance of the Mali G710 MC10 is up 10% compared to that of the Dimensity 9000, again according to MediaTek. The company does not specify if this is due to a GPU frequency increase or not.

Two twins for everything else

These are the only differences with the Dimensity 9000. This chip had anyway set the bar high enough at the end of 2021 not to lag behind in June 2022.

Like the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, MediaTek’s Soc retains the same 590 APU and Image Processor (ISP) (in this case the Imagiq 790). If many of our colleagues are talking about a redesign with a processing capacity of 9 Gpixel / s, support for 18-bit HDR on three modules and support for a 320 megapixel sensor, these characteristics were already present for the Dimensity 9000.

Same as far as connectivity options are concerned: the Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 standards were already supported by the first version of the SoC.

MediaTek specifies that the Dimensity 9000+ will be launched during the third quarter of 2022. As to whether this chip will be able to compete with Qualcomm and its Snapdragon 8+ Gen1, the answer is most definitely yes. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 are often quite close in the benchmarks, and very clever whoever can designate an overall winner. In any case, these two SoCs offer excellent levels of performance and are very rarely, if ever, faulted for the majority of the tasks expected of them.
