With the Klarna payment service you can easily pay bills online. In order for this to work, the application must of course be connected to your account. A request to renew your direct debit mandate, which you are currently receiving by email, does not seem very unusual at first.

However, the message with the headline “Renew direct debit mandate” does not come from Klarna, but from cybercriminals. The fraudsters want to use the phishing email to get your payment information and therefore your money.

In the text, the fraudsters claim that your direct debit mandate has already expired on April 11, 2024. In order to continue paying with Klarna, the mandate must be renewed immediately. There may also be fees for a return debit if you do not carry out the process.

A link marked “Renew” will take you to the supposedly necessary process. All you need to do is log in with your data and the process will be completed after five minutes. However, the link is only valid for 48 hours.

Under no circumstances should you follow this request. As the consumer advice center reports, the link leads to a fake Klarna page. If you register on this website, the fraudsters will automatically get hold of your login details. This makes it easy for them to make payments on your behalf.

Despite the personal address, you can quickly see that this is a phishing attempt. Putting pressure on a deadline and the sender address are clear indicators. The email should simply end up in the spam folder unread. We also recommend setting up two-factor authentication with Klarna. This increases the security of your account.
