“Broken”: Director David Ayer continues to mourn the re-editing of his 2016 film “Suicide Squad”.

The handling of the Warner Bros. studio with its film “Suicide Squad” “broke” David Ayer (55). The director revealed this in Podcast “Real One” with actor Jon Bernthal (46). Ayer has long complained that the edited version, which hit theaters in 2016, didn’t live up to his expectations.

In an interview, David Ayer criticizes the Hollywood system with drastic words. It was the worst with “Suicide Squad”: This “broke” him, he explained, among other things.

Those responsible cut “Suicide Squad” after “Deadpool” success

After David Ayer shot the war film “Heart of Steel” with Brad Pitt (59) in 2014, the world was open to him, as he now says. So the creators gave him free rein for “Suicide Squad”. But then “Deadpool” came out. The rough superhero comedy with Ryan Reynolds (46) became a surprise hit. According to Ayer, the makers re-edited “Suicide Squad” in order to cling to the success.

“Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful film into a damn comedy now,” the frustrated filmmaker tells the studio bosses. The critics panned “Suicide Squad” in the episode, but the film with Will Smith (54) and Margot Robbie (33) became a box office hit. Ayer has repeatedly publicly distanced himself from the theatrical version.

But Ayer can hope that his edited version will appear again. Finally, there are fan initiatives who demand the publication of the so-called Ayer-Cut. James Gunn (57), the new creative head of DC Studios recently hinted that he can imagine publishing the Ayer-Cut one day.
