KYIV, Aug 6 (Reuters) – The head of Amnesty International’s Ukraine office has resigned after the NGO published a report on Thursday accusing Ukraine of endangering civilian lives by deploying troops in living quarters as part of his war against Russia.
The Ukrainian authorities protested against the Amnesty International report which, according to Kyiv, is part of Moscow’s propaganda.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky criticized the NGO for “trying to shift the responsibility from the aggressor to the victim”.
Following the publication of the report, Oksana Pokalchuk announced Friday evening on Facebook her resignation, citing differences of opinion with the NGO.
Oksana Pokalchuk explained that the Ukrainian office had constantly pointed out that the information published Thursday by Amnesty International had to take into account the position of the Ukrainian Minister of Defense.
“Therefore, unwittingly, the organization created documents that appeared to support the Russian narrative. While everything is done to protect civilians, this report has become a tool of Russian propaganda,” wrote Oksana Pokalchuk.
