Director Paul Haggis has been sentenced to millions of dollars in damages for rape in a civil lawsuit.

A New York court last Thursday sentenced Canadian director and Oscar winner Paul Haggis (69) to $7.5 million in damages for raping a film publicist. Several US media recently reported that including “Variety”.

Plaintiff Haleigh Breest later said she was “grateful that the jury followed the facts and believed me.” Breest claimed in 2017 that Haggis sexually assaulted and raped her in 2013 after the premiere of the film Side Effects. At that time she was 26 years old.

The process was delayed by six years

The case has been delayed for so long, among other things, due to the corona pandemic. Meanwhile, four other women have come forward with allegations, three in support of Breest’s lawsuit. A British woman also claims that Haggis raped her at a film festival in Italy in June 2022. The Bond screenwriter was subsequently arrested.

As part of the #MeToo movement, several women accused him of sexual assault and abuse. However, the Canadian vehemently denies this.
