Director Xavier Beauvois burns his voter card after the defeat of Jean-Luc Mélenchon

Presidential Election 2022case

Disappointed after the new failure of the rebellious candidate to qualify for the second round, the director of the film “Of men and gods” broadcast a video of his gesture on social networks. A reaction that aroused strong criticism.

The palm of the political short film of Sunday evening. 30 seconds of static shot, in the dark. We hear the clink of the dishes, a few political comments that probably come from a TV still on and the thin crackling of the flames devouring a freshly stamped electoral card. 30 seconds of anger, filmed in chiaroscuro, using his smartphone. Such is the gesture of spite of the filmmaker Xavier Beauvois, director of “Men and gods”, “Remember that you are going to die” or more recently “Albatross”.

A few seconds earlier, the faces of Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen appeared on television screens, finalists in the second round of the presidential election. Once again, Jean-Luc Mélenchon failed in third position, with nearly 20.1% of the vote (before being reassessed at 22.2% later in the evening).

Earlier today, the 55-year-old director posted on his account Twitter a photo of his ballot for Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The video in which he immolates his anger was seen by more than 85,000 people this Monday morning. Not sure if this is his best film, according to many Internet users who criticized Beauvois’ latest staging. “Privilege», «indecency», «bullshit“… Rare are those who salute the initiative of the man.

For example, France Inter columnist Sophia Aram reacted strongly: “That moment of indecency when, without ever having lifted a finger, you enjoyed the rule of law, freedom of speech, the right to vote and… you end up burning your voter card and stage your little living room rebellion“, has she tweeted.

We reassure those who might be worried: on the day of the vote, if the presentation of their voter card is “recommended”, it is not mandatory. Only precious sesame which it is imperative to bring: an identity document. Passport, identity card, vital card or driving license, these identity documents do not necessarily have to be valid on the day of the vote. An identity card that has been expired for less than five years is thus accepted, as is a passport or a driving licence.
