disadvantaged families are more likely to have a child with disabilities

According to Jean-François Ravaud, emeritus research director at Inserm, children from precarious backgrounds are more likely to develop disabilities.

Not all children have the same luck in life. Some are born in conditions favorable to their personal development, others must struggle to have a decent life. According to Jean-François Ravaud, director of research emeritus at Inserm, the precariousness of parents increases the risk of having a child with disabilities. “All the studies show that there is a relationship between the socio-economic situation of parents and the prevalence of disabilities among those under 20. In particular, we have shown that in France, a worker's child has twice as often a disability as a manager's child ", he emphasizes.

“Children are not equal when it comes to the risks of impairments”

Having a disabled child requires more special attention and rigorous support, which in particular pushes parents to drastically reduce their working time or even to call on a third party to take care of the child. As a result, in disadvantaged families, the birth of a disabled child will have an even greater impact on family resources, unlike a couple of executives. “When we look at the educational level of parents, assumed to have been acquired before the birth of their children, we see that the prevalence of impairments among the latter is greater among those with less qualifications. This proves that the social background of the family does influence this prevalence. Children are not equal when it comes to the risks of impairments. It is higher in disadvantaged families. ”

More risk of premature births

Each year, more than 50,000 children are born premature, 10% of whom are very premature and 5% are very premature. These births often affect the brain, lungs, digestive tract and ductus arteriosus, which can make the child disabled. According to Inserm, premature births and the risk of accidents are also linked to the socio-economic situation of the parents.

However, preterm births are mostly spontaneous. The cause often remains unidentified, it may be early contractions or premature rupture of membranes.
