Say hello to Leo, Brave’s AI assistant
After Microsoft Edge, which integrated ChatGPT as a navigation assistant, and while waiting for Google to do the same with Google Chrome and Google Bard, its own chatbot launched in beta a few weeks ago, it’s the turn from Brave to present us with his own solution.
Leo, that’s his name, is the assistant that now equips the Brave browser. It is accessible from a new icon, Brave AI, placed in the sidebar where the various browser options are available.
Leo presents himself in an identical way to all the chatbots seen in recent months. A window allows you to type your request, a question, but you can also ask the assistant to type code or generate text to write a post, an email or even a short message to send to your contacts.
Technology that cares about user privacy
To develop its assistant, Brave used a large language model: Llama2, developed by the Meta teams. But the browser teams have worked to protect user privacy when using Leo.
Conversations with the assistant are not stored on Brave’s servers, and are not used to train the language model like ChatGPT can. They are also automatically deleted once the Brave AI tab is closed and no one can access the list of your requests. If you open a second tab to access Leo, you will not be able to find the history of the first conversation.
In the same vein, connections between your browser and the assistant pass through a proxy to anonymize your data.
The chatbot also cannot give you first-class information, since it is not connected to the web. If you use it to summarize the content of a web page, Brave will only access the text of the web page, or the transcript in the case of a YouTube video. Brave still plans to connect its tool to its own search engine, Brave Search, in the coming months.
Brave Leo is currently only offered in the latest beta version, called Brave Nightly by the publisher. You can download it from the official Brave website, but beware that these development versions may contain some bugs and are primarily intended for risk-aware developers and users.
