No mustard? No problem ! This ingredient makes it possible to replace it at a lower cost!

It is a key ingredient in our favorite recipes! Nearly 8 out of 10 French people consume it, so when there is a shortage of mustard, it’s a real problem! On social networks, Internet users share their adventures in the hunt for mustard. “After days and days of intensive hunting, I finally found a jar of mustard, it’s a miracle!” can we read on Twitter. If this consumer is happy to have gotten his hands on this magic jar, he has surely also paid a nice little sum since, according to a study by the IRI institute, its price has increased by 9% in one year!

Some then wonder if a “War in Dijon” was the reason for this shortage! In fact, the real culprit behind the disappearance of mustard from supermarket shelves is Canada. In fact, the country supplies 80% of the seeds used in France, they have therefore not come from Dijon or Burgundy for a long time. However, the year 2021 has been marked by severe droughts. According to figures from the Canadian Department of Agriculture, the seed production therefore fell by 28% for the 2021-2022 season.

Shortage of mustard: what to replace it with?

The shortage of mustard is pushing consumers to turn to other products to replace this ingredient. Wasabi or Worcestershire sauce are often cited among the possible alternatives. But it’s horseradish, “the mustard of the Germans” who wins hands down. Like radish and mustard, it is part of the brassica family. This plant is mainly grown for its root. The horseradish is cut, peeled, mixed with vegetable oil and vinegar to finally become a sauce. He is moreover very popular in Germany and Eastern countries. With its strong, spicy and peppery taste, you’ll feel like you’re eating mustard! Ideal for your tartars, your grilled meats or your fish. You can also use horseradish in your sandwiches and even in a salad dressing. This new ingredient therefore seems the perfect alternative to missing mustard supermarkets. Plus, you can find it everywhere! In the grocery store, as in the supermarket. It is available in the condiments department at Carrefour, Leclerc, Intermarché and Casino. Count 2 to 3€ for the 200g jar. You can also find it on the bienmanger.com online grocery store for €3.35 per 180g jar.
