A trend quickly adopted by celebrities, like Gigi Hadid or Anok Yai who proudly sported an inverted bob. Called the bell bottom bob in English this translates to the bell square in French. This hairstyle involves styling the points of the square towards the outside.

As hair expert Tom Smith explains to Glamor magazine, this hairstyle is “inspired by the flared cut of flared jeans and the silhouette of a bell”. In fact, the inverted square recreates the shape of flared jeans, but with a shorter square length. Like many beauty trends, this cut is inspired by fashion, which also has a very 70s influence. “Bell-bottom jeans are in fashion right now. There’s a lot of overlap,” explains Tom Smith.

This very trendy haircut is like a “bob which is turned down at the ends. It is fine on the head near the part and flares out with volume at the ends”, explains Tom Smith. You can wear it “either with perfect precision or with a more relaxed texture”, adds the expert. This hairstyle is very different from those seen in recent years. “The fact that this hairstyle has been adopted as a style and is intentionally exaggerated is really fun. It works with different lengths and different levels of dramatization,” explains the expert.

How to make the inverted square at home?

If you like this trend, the good news is that you can do it comfortably at home. To style your hair with an inverted bob, the ideal is therefore not to have damaged hair. If the ends of your square are all the same length, you just need to dry the hair with a small round brush that you position outwards.

“The more perfect the ends, the more spectacular the look. If you want to highlight a more symmetrical face, opt for a middle part and perfect flip of the ends. If you prefer a softer look, try a side part, with less precise ends and try tucking one side behind your ear. You can exaggerate it or make it soft and textured, as long as the bell silhouette remains visible,” explains Tom Smith.
