In Le Puy, the district of Ours-Mons

An archive from 1089 mentions the Gallic term in Olcio (arable land or enclosure). Called Ors, then Ours, the village, along with its neighbor, formed the commune of Ours-Mons in 1793. It has been a district of Puy-en-Velay since it became part of the Haute-Loire prefecture in 1965.

In Paris, rue aux Ours

From its construction in the 13th century, near Les Halles, the street as Oues (ie aux oies, in old French) hosted many roasters. But under the Ancien Régime, his name was distorted in rue aux Ours. It is now integrated into the 3rd arrondissement of Paris.

In Provence, the peak of the Bear

In the Esterel massif, which overlooks Saint-Raphaël, stand the Dent de l'Ours at an altitude of 417 meters and the Pic de l'Ours at 488 meters. There is also the cave or bear balm, one meter deep. But the mammal has not frequented the places for centuries.

In the Pyrenees, the Bear river

In Mauléon-Barousse, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, two bears are now just one! Two torrents, the Ourse of Ferrère and the Ours of Sost, in fact join to form the Ourse which then flows into the Garonne. Today, around fifty brown bears roam the Pyrenees.

In Alpe d'Huez, the Bear Forest

Skiers and mountain bikers who hurtle down the slopes and trails of Alpe d'Huez, in the Rousses en Oisans massif, have the opportunity to cross the Bear forest. Present in the Slovenian and Italian Alps, the animal could return to the French side within a few years.
