Disguised as a soldier – three Nigerians cheated on a Salzburg pensioner

One of the Nigerians pretended to be a soldier looking for help on social media, feigned an emergency situation and thus stole a low five-digit euro amount from a pensioner.

At the end of September, a Salzburg pensioner received messages from an unknown person via a social media platform. The man posed as a member of the army stationed abroad. After about two weeks, the man hoped for financial support. He was in an emergency situation and now had to pay medical expenses after a serious accident. The 73-year-old from Salzburg made four transactions to different accounts by the end of October. After investigations, three Nigerians (a 21-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and a 28-year-old woman) were identified as the perpetrators in close cooperation with the Bavarian border police. Several investigations into fraud and money laundering are already being conducted in Germany against the 21-year-old. The accused are reported to the Salzburg public prosecutor’s office. The woman from Salzburg suffered damage of just over 11,000 euros.
