For several years Disney has been trying to capitalize on its classics and another great movie is now in the sights of live-action film. Here’s what we know.
It probably did not escape you, but since the success of Maleficent in 2014, Disney wants to capitalize as much as possible on its classic works of animation to offer live action versions with real actors. Proof of this is the recent release of The little Mermaid and the very contrasting (to put it mildly) Peter Pan & Wendy on Disney+. Now the company wants to tackle another cartoon masterpiece and it risks breaking your childhood more.
Disney is betting on ITS great animal classic
Disney wants to adapt Bambi in live action and would even be on the point of having found its director with the potential presence of Sarah Polley as we can learn via the always very informed media Deadline. Good or bad news?
First of all who is Sarah Polley? This is a Canadian actress and director who we saw in the science fiction film Splice or the zombie movie Army of the Dead (2004). On the creation side, she will produce in 2022 Women Talking which tells the story of a group of Mennonite women having to make a decision following assaults. In his course we are still quite far from the cute film for children (even if Bambi is deeply sad) and we can say that the artist has a special talent for drama. Maybe a perfect choice for this particular story? Nevertheless, the idea of a live film already raises fears and questions.
Bambi and the fear of disappointment
The problem with this type of live action adaptation is the fear of syndrome Lion Kingnamely transforming animal characters from a collective imagination (the cartoons) into versions without character as could be the case with the much criticized 2019 film. Obviously we can always hope for a sublime dramatic and touching version of this classic of Disney but we can also fear yet another tasteless adaptation like the recent Peter Pan. However all the films of this type are not failures and we remember for example the excellent cruella or the very exciting The Lady and the Tramp which includes many animals. So good or bad news, time will tell, but the fears are legitimate.
