Disney is getting in tune with Netflix. After the restrictions on account sharing brought in June by the N rouge streaming platform, it’s Disney+’s turn to prepare limitations to its service in India, in particular by reducing the possible number of registered devices.
Soon in France ?
According to our colleagues at Reuters, Disney+ Hotstar — the Indian and Indonesian streaming service of Walt Disney — plans to reduce the number of registered devices per account from ten to just four.
In India and Indonesia, Disney+ Hotstar has more than 50 million subscribers and offers three offers: Free (with a strong limitation of use), Super (899 rupees per year, or €9.95) and Premium (1499 rupees per year, i.e. €16.60).
Currently, in India as in France, Disney+ allows its subscribers to watch four streams simultaneously, and each account can record and download films and shows on ten different devices (TV, phone, tablet). In India, this limit would therefore drop to four devices for Premium accounts, and even to only two devices for Standard accounts.
This strategy would initially target the platform’s Premium subscribers, and would aim to limit account sharing: “Some people will be encouraged to buy their own subscription”said a source.
If the situation is not quite similar in France, where Disney+ only offers a subscription at €8.99 per month (or €89.90/year), such a reduction in registered devices is without any also doubt in the pipes.
No official information has yet been announced, but just like Netflix, the streaming platform with big ears is undoubtedly thinking of whistling the end of recess, by forcing those who take advantage of the account of their loved ones to go to the checkout. To be continued.
