Disney+: older than Star Trek and Star Wars, this science fiction series is celebrating its 60th anniversary!

The British series “Doctor Who” is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary on Disney+, with the broadcast of three special episodes marked by the big return of David Tennant!

From this Saturday, November 25, the Disney+ platform will offer in France the first of three special episodes of the British series Doctor Who, commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the cult program!

Launched on November 23, 1963 on the BBC, Doctor Who follows the adventures of a Time Lord, an extraterrestrial from the planet Gallifrey, who travels through time and space.

On board the TARDIS spaceship (which takes the appearance of a police box), generally alongside a companion, the latter has the particularity of being able to change appearance, a process called “regeneration”, and so on. escaping death every time he is seriously injured.

Since 1963, thirteen performers (fourteen including the War Doctor played by John Hurt) have played the main role of Doctor Who. After an initial broadcast until 1989, the series made its comeback on television in 2005 with the introduction of a new Doctor (the ninth in the official hierarchy) played by Christopher Eccleston.

The Tenth Doctor succeeds the Thirteenth Doctor

David Tennant is probably the most iconic interpreter of the Doctor. His charming interpretation of the character was very often offset by the darkness of certain episodes. During her reign, iconic characters such as River Song and Donna Noble made their debut on the series, as well as famous adversaries including the terrifying Weeping Angels.

After three seasons and a handful of special episodes, David Tennant said goodbye to the character in 2010, passing the torch to Matt Smith. The Scottish actor, however, returned for a duo adventure with his successor (a double presence of the Doctor made possible thanks to the magic of time travel), on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the series in 2013.

The next Doctor performer has already been announced: it is Ncuti Gatwa, seen in particular in the series Sex Education. However, what was the surprise of fans during the farewell episode of Jodie Whittaker (the thirteenth performer of the character) to see the latter regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa… but into David Tennant!

The question of these three special episodes will therefore no longer be Doctor Who, but Doctor How. Yes, how can we justify that for the first time a regeneration of the Doctor makes him borrow the features of a previous incarnation?

And why this version of the Time Lord, when it has also been announced that his iconic companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) will appear during these anniversary episodes?

So many questions will be answered by these three special adventures, to be discovered on Disney+ from this Saturday, November 25, then on December 2 for episode 2 and finally on December 9 for the third episode. The series will then make its return on December 25, for the traditional Christmas episode!

New episodes of Doctor Who can now be found exclusively on Disney+.
