At Disney +, the start of the year is marked by softness. As always, the big-eared platform’s problem is the same: if no major Marvel, Star Wars, Disney or Pixar series or films are planned, all of the programming suffers. In January, we will therefore console ourselves with a series / documentary diptych on the place of women in 90s hip-hop, as well as several very good acquisitions. Among them, we will mention the cult Firefly or the 12th season of Bob’s Burger side series, and some productions of M. Night Shyamalan and Alejandro González Iñárritu in terms of films.
The event of the month: Queens, January 19
On the occasion of the release of the documentary The Real Queens of Hip-Hop: The Women who Changed the Game, Disney + is offering a series in the same universe this month. Queens recounts the return to the front of the stage of four women, former glories of hip-hop in the 90s. A fairly simple pitch for a program which will especially interest enthusiasts and / or nostalgic for this era. A little coquetry that reinforces the authenticity of the series, the actresses embodying the main characters themselves interpret the pieces heard on the screen.
We will (re) see with pleasure: Firefly, January 12
If you are an informed serial fan, you probably already know Firefly. Created in 2002 by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, A.k.a, Avengers), this series combining science fiction and western was canceled very quickly by Fox, when a hard core of fans had already formed. Only 14 episodes were thus able to see the light of day, but the universe of the series coupled with its sad fate and the energy of the fans have enabled it to acquire a status of truly cult object, very often monopolizing the first places in the rankings of the best space series. Obviously, Firefly looks its age today, but its writing and especially its very endearing characters make it a program with a strong potential for re-viewing.
We will also (re) see with pleasure: Unbreakable, January 21
Right after the success of Sixth Sense and his famous final twist, M. Night Shyamalan was expected around the corner. His choice then fell on a genre that was not yet the goose that laid the golden eggs of Hollywood cinema, the superhero film. If its version is much darker than the one offered by Marvel today, it is nonetheless captivating. Long before playing Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson shines brightly as a cripple fan of comic-books in search of the real superhero. Shyamalan, at the height of his art, multiplies the clues for the attentive spectator, in particular thanks to a staging that is always so inventive. Probably one of his best feature films.
