Since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, children have been rocked by the studio’s fairy tales The Walt Disney. And for its stories, the studio aux Grandes oreille is inspired by real tales, in particular the works of the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault or Hans Christian Andersen.

But the original stories, very often themselves adapted from popular tales, are not always joyful.

Disney didn’t invent the stories for its animated classics, but the studio made many changes to the original works to make them suitable for everyone. And the studio’s films are now so famous that it’s easy to forget that a much more gory version exists.

Looking back to the original tales we discover that the heroes of our childhood were in fact torturers, rapists and cannibals. in the tale Snow White of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm for example, the stepmother wants the organs of the heroine – then 7 years old – to eat them in order to take her youth.

Murder, torture, suicide, kidnapping, rape… These are the real subjects of the works that have brought joy to thousands of children around the world.

These folk and popular tales were intended to scare people into following the rules. The original writings all have a moral: obedience of children, fidelity, vain search for glory or eternal youth…

Spectators can therefore thank Disney for bringing happy endings to the characters and not having traumatized entire generations.
