Merlin the Wizard isn’t the most well-known of the Disney classics, but it’s the studio’s first animated feature to be directed by a single director, Wolfgang Reitherman. Otherwise, since the origins, the films of the House of Mickey were co-productions.
Released in 1963, this cartoon did not have a simple production. Launched at a time when the studio was experiencing serious financial problems, it was only kept in production by decision of Walt, who felt that the Disney public should have an animated film to put before their eyes from time to time. At that time, the emphasis was on “live-action” films (9 in 1962 alone) and Walt was actively preparing the film Mary Poppins, one of his passion projects.
Merlin the magician is therefore a little neglected, made a little “in automatic mode”, which nevertheless makes it an honest entertainment with some memorable sequences such as the tidying up of Merlin’s house in his suitcase or the sequence under Marine.
