Basil, private detective recounts the investigation of Basil of Baker Street and Doctor Dawson to find Mr. Flaversham, inventor kidnapped by the terrible Ratigan. His daughter Olivia Flaversham asks the mouse detective duo for help and together they will foil a plot fomented against the Queen of England herself!

This film was started by directors John Musker and Ron Clements because they had just been ousted from Taram and the Magic Cauldron. At the time, it is given to them to occupy them, but the studio’s money is mostly put on Taram. The latter is ultimately a rather remarkable flop, and the head of Disney at the time is replaced by Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg who will give Basil the green light. It will be a modest success in theaters but will catch up on the video market.

The song Let Me Spoil You was almost cut from the film, as the lyrics were deemed very risky for a Disney cartoon: “Hey guys, it’s time / Tonight we have all the time / Let your dreams come true / Let me spoil you”. Finally, it will be kept thanks to the fact that it is sung by a mouse character and not a human. Madonna was to interpret it, but it is ultimately Melissa Manchester who will sing it.

The soundtrack is by Henry Mancini, who had worked on Diamonds on a Sofa, The Pink Panther or Victor, Victoria. This is his first composition for an animated feature film. He had, however, orchestrated the short Pluto’s Christmas Tree in 1952 and composed part of 101 Dalmatians (1961).
