The end of Disney cinema outings soon? The threat is real, we explain why.

If there are many theatrical releases that are synonymous with family sessions, it is the films produced by Disney. From cartoons to Marvel-type blockbusters, there is something for all ages. However, Disney threatens not to release anything in the cinema! The reason for this blackmail? It is based on French cultural legislation, more specifically on our famous French cultural exception. To preserve the possibilities of creation and the financing of cultural productions, France has a specific operation: the chronology of the media. This rule governs the life of a film after its theatrical release. Once the film is released, it can be available on video on demand four months later, then on Canal + 8 months later, then 22 months later (almost two years after its theatrical release) on free channels, and finally 36 months, so three years, later on streaming platforms. This rule, which gives priority to theatrical releases and then to Canal +, the leading private investor in cinema in France, only exists here.

The end of the Disney and the Warner?

According to Variety magazine, Disney wants to challenge this rule. To protest, the company therefore threatens outright to release its films only on its own platform, Disney +. And that could be the start of cascading withdrawals, as the Warner Company threatens to do the same. This exit from the classic circuit could do a lot of harm to cinema exhibitors. The boss of Pathé, Ardavan Safaee, explains that “independent films benefit from blockbuster admissions” – in particular, because the National Center for Cinema and Animated Image (CNC) earns a percentage for each entry, which is then reinvested in productions and grants. The CNC had therefore called on the various players to come to an agreement to find a model that suited everyone. It is not currently. Are we going to have to increase subscriptions to different platforms to be able to follow the adventures of our Disney and our favorite superhero films? Case to follow. In any case, popcorn is certainly better at the movies!
