Disney World visitor has $40,000 extorted from her Apple Watch

That’s what you might call a ruined vacation! A tourist who visited Walt Disney World in Florida claims she was the victim of major credit card fraud after she lost her AppleWatch in an attraction.

However, certain elements collected as part of the investigation cast doubt…

A very expensive stay at Mickey’s

If lost or stolen objects are unfortunately numerous in very touristic destinations, it is rare to lose 40,000 dollars in the enchanted kingdom of Walt Disney (despite the unreasonable prices that are applied there). However, this is what would have happened to a tourist on April 13th. The fault of his Apple Watch Hermès fell to the level of attraction The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT.

The victim explains that his connected watch has detached from his wrist at an elevated position of the carousel. The object then passed through the floor. Fortunately, park employees told the woman that the watch would be picked up by them and then taken back to her hotel. Still, Disney Guest Relations staff later said the Apple Watch had not been found.

True fraud or blunder?

It is at this moment that the situation escalates. Indeed, the woman would have started to receive notifications mentioning fraud on her bank card. The victim claimed that several cards were stored on his watch, including an American Express with unlimited credit. So much so that after a few days, $40,000 had evaporated… If the person has taken all the steps in order to deactivate their cards, a question remains unanswered…

How could such a fraud take place simply through an Apple Watch? The watch from the American firm, however, has an automatic lock when it detaches from the wrist of its owner. A malicious person would then have to find the correct PIN code to access the various features. So, unless there is an extremely simple code to guess, it is unlikely to use the watch without completely resetting it (and thus erasing all the data belonging to its owner). Alas, we will probably never have the end of this story.
