In the United States, registering your gender pronouns on social networks, in the signature at the bottom of your emails or under your name in videoconferencing is becoming more and more frequent, especially in the world of work. This use allows transgender or non-binary people (identifying themselves neither strictly male nor strictly female, but between the two, a mixture of the two, or neither of the two) indicate which pronouns reflect their gender identity. Used by everyone, it becomes a way to promote the inclusion of these communities.

According to Wall Street Journal, 1.6 million users would have specified their gender pronouns. In France, this option has been available since June.

Goldman Sachs is one of the first large institutions to launch an internal pronoun awareness campaign in 2019. On its blog, the Wall Street firm listed “Tips for being an inclusive ally”. For example, “Pronouns should not be assumed on the basis of a person’s name or physical appearance”. It offers employees the opportunity to make their pronouns known “Proactively, in order to foster an environment of respect”, with this illustration: “Hello, my name is Karen! My pronouns are “she / her”. Welcome in the team ! “ The bank also recommends using “they / them” “When referring to a person who has not expressly indicated his pronouns”.
