Distribution: Canadian Couche-Tard and British EG Group discuss merger – sources

NEW YORK (Agefi-Dow Jones)–Canadian retailers Alimentation Couche-Tard and British distributors EG Group are discussing a combination to create a new global champion in convenience stores and gas stations, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Canadian group, which has nearly 7,000 stores in the United States and as many abroad, has discussed a possible takeover of EG which would value the British company at around $ 16 billion or more including debt, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The talks have not resulted in an agreement so far and there is a possibility that they could break down, the sources said.

In the event of a merger, the new group would post an annual turnover of more than 70 billion dollars and would have some 21,000 establishments in fast food, food stores and service stations, in more than 30 countries.

It would bring together EG’s network in the UK, Western Europe and Australia with Couche-Tard’s network in the US, Canada, Northern Europe and other countries.
