A large number of rescue workers were on duty in Vienna’s Seestadt on Friday evening. As confirmed by the Vienna professional rescue service, a “large search operation” took place on site. After about 40 minutes, a person could actually be rescued from the water.
Numerous emergency services raced to Lake Aspern shortly before 8 p.m. – the professional rescue service confirmed the search operation to krone.at. In addition to the fire brigade and police, a rescue helicopter was also on site. Videos on social networks show the arrival of the aircraft. In view of the high temperatures, many may have taken the opportunity to cool off in the lake – so there were numerous onlookers on site. According to initial information, a person should not have appeared after bathing. Their accompaniment is said to have set the rescue chain in motion. The divers who arrived quickly searched the water – the onset of darkness made the conditions difficult. After about 40 minutes they brought one person to the surface. Resuscitation began immediately and the affected person was handed over to the Viennese professional rescue service. However, the emergency services could do nothing more for the person, she died at the scene of the accident. Just last year, an eleven-year-old girl drowned in the bathing lake in Seestadt Aspern. The little one apparently slipped into deeper and deeper water. The shore area of the lake is quite shallow, but due to the pebbles in the water there is a risk of slipping quickly into the deeper water.
