What’s going on in the handicraft scene this year, which techniques are on the rise and which materials are popular? Brigitte.de spoke to The Creative Club about the trends for 2022 in the DIY scene. Read here what DIY enthusiasts can look forward to this year!

This much is certain: the DIY scene, like any other scene, is its own cosmos that is constantly changing, picking up on and developing trends and reflecting socio-political currents. We wanted to know more about what the scene will look like in 2022! We spoke to Chantal Pisarzowski, Laura Bangrazi and Julia Martin from The Creative Club – Europe’s leading digital company in the DIY market, which operates the creative platforms stoffe.de and makerist.de. Here you can find out how the topic of sustainability is implemented in the handicraft scene and how feminist topics are expressed!

Dear Laura, dear Chantal and dear Julia, what trends can you currently observe in the handicraft scene?
Laura:
We see a general trend development in particular towards sustainability: Here we rely on transparency regarding the origin, procurement and composition of the materials. This is a very important point that is becoming more and more important to our customers and our suppliers: it shows the appreciation of the material and the people who work with it. We see another trend development through the effects of the corona virus in both the fashion industry and the textile industry: Here, comfort is paired with a thirst for adventure. The area of comfort has developed through the home office: jogging pants are increasingly worn while working and the apartment is furnished in such a way that one finds or reinvents one’s own comfort. So you have a certain balance between a settled lifestyle and an exciting lifestyle that you developed for yourself during the Corona period.

Chantal: In fashion we are seeing a move towards minimalistic, clean lines that play around the body – everything that is comfortable but also looks chic at the same time! Casual comfort clothing is pimped with exciting accessories. For 2022, we also see our DIY community becoming bolder when it comes to color choices and materials. You try things out and the boundaries between what is “allowed” and what isn’t become blurred. In addition, embroidery is becoming increasingly popular, especially floral embroidery patterns. The DIY community wants to reconnect with nature: people want to become more sustainable and make this visible to the outside world. Embroideries with political statements are also on the rise. B. the statement “Wash your hands”, which is very topical at the moment. In terms of DIY trends, pottery is also becoming more popular again. Pearls will also be added as a trend, e.g. B. pearl jewelry or mobile phone pearl charms.
the Macrame trend also remains the same: Especially if you want to pimp up your home a bit during Corona times, wall hangings, hanging baskets, but also macrame carpets are ideal. The boho and rebirth look in fashion go hand in hand with the macramé trend: long, flowing dresses, airy blouses with embroidery and tassels are popular at the moment.

Which materials are particularly popular this year?

Laura: In the new season 2022 are organic materials popular, such as linen, hemp or cotton. Denim will also be a big trend in Spring/Summer. In particular, our GOTS-certified fabrics are very much in focus. In addition, jersey is up-to-date, which is actually the constant hit in every season and every year. In addition, special materials are coming, e.g. B. Mesh constructions for festival outfits – if festivals can take place again this summer. Otherwise there is the trend towards lace or broderie anglaise – inspired by last season and based on the “romantic country style” trend.

What other trends have you identified in relation to more sustainability in the DIY scene?

Laura: We prefer to look for and sell organic materials, such as linen, which was otherwise only a seasonal material for the summer but is now hip all year round. The demand for GOTS qualities, both in the basic and in the printed area, is increasing in general. With regard to our material producers, we see many more offers of both GOTS quality and look organic and recycled materials. There will be e.g. For example, fabrics from PET bottles or from older fabric qualities are woven together into new materials. In any case, you can see that the trend is going further and that a lot is also changing in the offer.

What is the concrete situation in the field of DIY instructions? Is there a clear focus on more sustainability?

Chantal: We definitely see that! We had a lot of growth due to Corona, because people had time to deal with DIY in the first place. There are more and more guides/e-books for Homemade to replace disposable products: e.g. B. self-sewn cosmetic pads, period underwear, cloth pads or sustainable bowl covers for the household. Upcycling is also a big topic: Clothing is no longer simply thrown away, but attempts are made to revalue it, e.g. B. a denim jacket is sewn from old jeans. “Visual mending” in particular will become vogue: This means repairing clothing in such a way that it can be seen and worn on the outside, e.g. B. by working with a contrast yarn.

Julia:We also see with our designers that sustainability is becoming more and more important. Patterns are designed in such a way that as little fabric as possible has to be thrown away at the end and the loss of fabric is significantly reduced. Accordingly, less material has to be bought. And if something is left over, a suitable accessory can be made out of it.

Chantal: We launched the Makerist AR app at the beginning of last year: With the help of the app and augmented reality, you can transfer a pattern directly to the fabric and cut it immediately – paper is no longer needed to transfer the patterns. Overall, we have seen from our customers and designers that there is a general will and that everyone is very curious designing more sustainable cuts and trying out new technologies.

Are other political and feminist issues also included in the handicraft scene and if so, in which areas?

Julia: We always include socio-political issues in our observations and see that fashion, DIY and social movements influence each other. The embroidery definitely includes feminist statements. We also see that period underwear or reusable panty liners are increasingly being sewn by oneself. So come feminist themes, such as periods, into DIY. This breaks with the taboo “period” and combines feminist topics and sustainability.

Chantal: The feminist approach also goes hand in hand with the editing, e.g. B. in the form of gender neutral clothing and in that the boundaries between the sexes – which gender is allowed to wear or sew what – are fluid. The trend is also towards oversize and androgynous, there are no longer any rules. At the same time, one also shows skin, dresses body-hugging regardless of size and works with transparent materials. the Body positivity movement is also reflected in the craft scene. The movement quickly becomes clear here, since the DIY community sews based on the situation and for its current needs, in contrast to large corporations, which prepare collections over a longer period of time.

What else can DIY enthusiasts look forward to this year?

Chantal: Especially embroidery, which is going to be a big topic! In addition, you can look forward to everything that goes in the direction of boho style and a connection to nature.

Laura: In the prints area, DIY enthusiasts can look forward to floral and vegetative motifs as well as animal prints be happy. In the field of design, we have paired minimalism with extravagance, e.g. B. in the form of structure in the surface or minimalist graphic elements. When it comes to colors, we can do one for the new season Focus on trend colors in particular: orchid, something in the purple-violet range and still appears strong with a little magenta. We also have combination trend colors such as olive, ocean blue, honey orange and sand.
