Do we really need a Star Wars video game every 6 months?


Disney would like to flood the market with Star Wars video games, with a novelty every six months. Isn’t that a bit too much?

We hope you like video games, Star Wars and, above all, video games Star Wars. Because, according to an indiscretion signed Insider Gaming and published on September 26, Disney would have the ambition to launch no less than two video game adaptations inherited from the cult saga per year – via the Lucasfilm Games label –, at the rate of a novelty every the six months.

At first glance, the idea would be to launch a big game each year (the famous AAA or triple A), accompanied by a more modest project that would allow fans to be kept in suspense until the next release. To date, eight Star Wars video games are currently in development, including three at Electronic Arts (the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderin particular), one at Ubisoft and one at Quantic Dream.

We understand Disney’s strategy to grow its huge brand empire, reaching as many people as possible and exploiting each compartment. This strategy works in the cinema: each new Marvel film becomes a box office success. She is also at work on Disney+, a platform that hosts original series, whether stamped Marvel or Star Wars. But in video games, it is not certain that such an accumulation will be crowned with success — the way of experiencing a work is not the same (a film takes 2 hours of time, where a game can be a overwhelming experience, with tens of hours of life).

Then there is the issue of quality. One ambitious project per year involves sufficient strike force to maintain the pace while preserving the human factor (and escaping the crunch phenomenon). On this point, remember that Disney has addressed this subject by ending the partnership with Electronic Arts. The American publisher had exclusivity on video game adaptations. Without this deal, Disney can knock on more doors to develop a myriad of projects in parallel and, in turn, ensure a steady pace of releases – provided that the different studios are well coordinated.

We also have to see what Disney means by this idea of ​​​​proposing a project on a more modest scale. If the goal is to release mobile games of questionable interest, filled with dubious microtransactions, the multinational would do better to abstain and let its partners work in peace, offering them maximum creative freedom. To pull too hard on the trade rope is to take the risk of losing players along the way. Assassin’s Creed suffered because of the annualization wanted by Ubisoft. There is better on the side of the projects Star Wars in video games (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderfor example), and we don’t want the quantity to end up ruining everything.
