Unlikely, but very real: Fortnite is one of the games selected for Olympic Esports Week to be held at the end of June 2023.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on May 5, 2023 details of its first major esports event. Olympic Esports Week will be held in Singapore from June 22 to 25, with a big surprise on the program.

Fortnite invites itself to Olympic Esports Week

While we were expecting a selection made up solely of sports simulation games, the IOC surprised us by integrating Fortnite to the competition. So far, however, the organization seemed reluctant to integrate consumer titles that do not have a direct link with real disciplines, but it changed its tune and authorized an exception for publishing to come.

The competition will feature 12 players from the Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS), the competitive scene of the popular Battle Royale. The organizer sees Fortnite the ideal representative of the shooter genre. The games will be broadcast on the official website Olympics.com as well as on the Olympic social networks.

The IOC specifies that the event is neither sponsored nor organized by Epic Games, and that the personal information provided by the players will therefore not be communicated to the publisher.

The IOC also took the opportunity to specify the calendar for the competitions. On Friday, June 23, we will be entitled to archery games (Tic Tac Bow), cycling (Zwift), of dance (just dance) and sailing (Virtual Regatta). On Saturday 24, baseball will be in the spotlight (WBSC eBASEBALL: POWER PROS) with taekwondo (Virtual Taekwondo), the shot (Fortnite) and tennis (Tennis Clash). Sunday 25 will be devoted to motorsport (Gran Turismo) and chess (Chess.com).

To spice it up, exhibition games are also planned on NBA 2K23, Eleven Table Tennis, Rocket League and other games, but out of competition.

To attend Olympic Esports Week, ticket prices start at 10 Singapore dollars (7 euros) for one day, and 20 Singapore dollars (14 euros) for a 3-day pass.
