Twice a year, AV-Comparatives delivers its ranking of anti-virus less greedy. According to the site, Microsoft Windows Defender is still as bad, while K7 and Panda stand out as good performers.

To stand out in the overcrowded antivirus market, some solutions rely primarily on the quality of the protection offered, and others on their low impact on system performance. Well, let’s be honest, for this second point, unless you have an antique PC, the impact of an antivirus on performance is now a negligible factor for the overwhelming majority of users… yours, the site AV-Comparatives publishes semi-annually (in April and October) its ranking of the least hardware-intensive antiviruses.

Test procedure

As a preamble, it should be noted that the proposed classification evaluates exclusively the impact of the antivirus software on the performance of the system (its optimization, in short). It is not intended to determine the effectiveness of protection against threats. On the other hand, know thatAV-Comparatives presents itself as an independent organization.

The comparison includes 17 products with antivirus and internet protection. There are of course great classics such as Avast Free Antivirus 22.3, Avira Prime 1.1, Bitdefender Internet Security 26.0 or Microsoft Defender 4.18. The tests were carried out on a qualified entry-level computer. This mobilizes an Intel Core i3 processor (exact reference not specified), 4 GB of RAM and an SSD. The PC is running Windows 10 21H2 64-bit.

The necessarily standardized test procedure involves different scenarios: copying files, archiving, installing and uninstalling software, launching applications, downloading files, browsing the Internet. The site also runs a PC Mark 10 Professional Edition test suite. The various measures lead to the attribution of an impact score: the lower it is, the less the antivirus “slows down” the PC.

Results: K7 at the top

Among the 17 antiviruses tested, the best performer in terms of performance impact is K7, with a score of 1.6. It is ahead of Panda (2.5) and ESET (3.4).

Last in the class is Total Defense, with a score of 27.4. Microsoft Windows Defender also wears a dunce cap, with an index of 24.6. These two solutions struggle especially in copy and installation tasks. Unfortunately, AV-Comparatives does not provide any precise value, in particular temporal.

Depending on the results, AV-Comparatives classifies antiviruses into three categories. Of the 17 put to the test, the majority, 9, get three stars, 6 are put in the two-star category, and the two aforementioned dunces make up the one-star category.

Why do antivirus vendors offer crypto mining services?

Norton, Avira… Some services originally dedicated to antiviruses are now diversifying by offering virtual currency mining functions. The trajectory of these companies seems to be moving away from their primary goal, namely to protect Internet users by neutralizing any malicious software. It therefore seems judicious to ask ourselves: why did these publishers decide to follow this evolution? Is this novelty potentially a plus for the average Internet user? Do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages offered by such a feature?
