From the film’s premieres, Barbie began to win over audiences and critics. Made in 2017, lady bird is the first (non-independent) film directed by Greta Gerwig. It earned a rather rare 99% positive review score on Rotten Tomatoes. The feature film was even nominated, in 2018, for the Oscar for best film (5 Oscar nominations in all, although none were won: best director; best original screenplay; best actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best Supporting Actress for Laurie Metcalf).

Saoirse Ronan plays Christine McPherson, alias “Lady Bird”, 17 years old. We are between 2003 and 2004, in Sacramento. The film endorses the most beautiful setting of the coming-of-age movie, a tumultuous initiation of the transition to adulthood. While she wants more than anything to study at a major university on the East Coast, her mother is against it. In the last year of high school, Lady Bird is passionate about the arts and discovers love.

The Daughters of Doctor March (Little Women) (2019)

It is a major work that Greta Gerwig then adapted to the cinema: The Daughters of Doctor March (Or Little Women in OV). Written by Louisa May Alcott, it was published in 1868-1869. This story dedicated to the daily life of four sisters, in the midst of the Civil War, has touched an ever-growing audience, to the point of making a lasting mark on literature.

There have been many film adaptations: in 1918, 1933, 1949, 1994. Not to mention the TV movies and TV series. The 1994 film adaptation, very beautiful in its classicism, brought together a prestigious cast (Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon, Christian Bale…).

Greta Gerwig’s proposal, in 2019, was a total success, both aesthetically and narratively. Again, it is a success with the public and critics. Greta Gerwig had confided that she had put a little Wizard of Oz In Barbie. The director’s love for fantasy will be confirmed: she will now focus on two movies adapting the Chronicles of Narniafor Netflix.

As for a possible Barbie 2which would already be in the boxes of Warner in the form of a spin-off on Ken, remains to be seen whether this sequel will again be entrusted to the director who, decidedly, is now a confirmed figure in Hollywood.
