Do you need a birth certificate to renew your identity card (CNI)? : Current Woman The MAG

When you renew your identity card or passport, mandatory documents (often the same) must be provided. Compliant photo, proof of address, pre-application, tax stamp… among the lot, one piece of paper seems not to be systematically returned: the birth certificate. Is it obligatory? Well, it all depends on your situation.

Renewal of identity card: in which situations is it necessary to provide a birth certificate?

The requirement to present a birth certificate depends on several factors. You won’t need it if :

  • Your identity card is valid.
  • The validity date of your identity card has passed for less than 5 years.
  • The expiry date of your identity card has passed for more than 5 years and you have a valid passport.
  • Your identity card has expired for more than 5 years and you have a passport with an expiry date less than 5 years ago.

On the other hand, if you are in one of the following situations, you will need to provide a birth certificate (full copy or extract with parentage) less than 3 months old:

  • Your identity card has expired for more than 5 years and you have a passport with an expiry date more than 5 years ago.
  • The validity date of the card has passed for more than 5 years and you do not have a passport.

Please note that if your identity card is lost, the situations are identical.

How to obtain a birth certificate?

Two possibilities: either your municipality is involved in the dematerialization process, which allows the municipality to transmit civil status data to another municipality digitally and you have nothing to give, or it is not part of it. So, to request it, simply go to the form (accessible here), to identify yourself with France Connect and follow the procedure. Please note, some municipalities do not work with this method. You will then need to send them your request by post, enclosing a pre-filled stamped envelope. Find out before taking the steps.
