After Pôle Emploi, it is the turn of the “LeBonCoin” site to be the victim of a major cyber-attack. The platform has just shared an important press release intended for its users.
Cyber attacks are increasing among online commerce giants. On February 8, Social Security was the victim of a huge cyber-attack which led to the distribution of the social security numbers of nearly 33 million French people. At the end of January 2024, two of the largest operators specializing in third-party payment management, Viamedis and Almerys, were in fact cyberattacked, leading to the dissemination of these 33 million social security numbers.
The CNIL then instructed the two mutual organizations to notify the insured victims of the leak as well as to additional customers of the two organizations, Viamedis and Almerys. Policyholders also had the possibility of contacting their complementary health insurance themselves to obtain an update on the situation and find out if they are affected by this leak.

France Travail (Pôle Emploi) subject to massive theft of personal data
We take note that this is not the first time that a large French organization has been affected by a cyber-attack. During the summer of 2023, it was France Travail (formerly Pôle Emploi) which had to deal with the theft of millions of personal data. In a press release, management then explained that the organization had taken note “the violation of the information system of one of its service providers, involving a risk of disclosure of personal data of job seekers.”
The service provider in question was Majorel, a company responsible for digitizing and processing all documents transmitted by those registered with Pôle Emploi. Following this leak, it was then reported the theft of sensitive data of around ten million job seekers or former unemployed people who would be concerned, with a real risk of identity theft for these people.

Faced with this cyber attack, the LeBonCoin site quickly reacted and ensures that this incident is due to a “technical bug”. “We are constantly working to implement technical and organizational measures to prevent this type of incident, in collaboration with our Data Protection Officer,” indicated the online resale giant.
“We take the protection of our users and their data particularly seriously. The French platform has also informed the National Commission for Informatics and Liberties (CNIL), the authority regulating personal data in France” is then written.
