Chatbots like ChatGPT and DALL·E have made AI a hot topic. And beyond the buzzword, the need for people and skills to support these advances is also growing.
The “AI Index” report, from Stanford University, shows that in 2022, the demand for AI jobs in the United States has not been so high since 2014.

But although the overall demand is high, AI encompasses a wide range of technologies and subfields. Therefore, employers are looking for people with different sets of specific AI skills, depending on their individual use case.
So what are the most in-demand AI skills today?
When you think of AI, you most likely associate it with one of the generative AI models that are getting a lot of attention right now. Not surprisingly, according to the Stanford report, the most in-demand skill is machine learning, which appears in 1.03% of all job postings.
Machine learning refers to the subsection of AI that teaches a system to make a prediction based on the data it was trained on. Generative AI is therefore an area of machine learning.
Machine learning is followed by a broader skill group of AI, which accounts for 0.61% of all job openings.

Natural language processing (0.20%), neural networks (0.16%), autonomous driving (0.15%), visual image recognition (0.13%) and robotics (0.06 %) are at the bottom of the table.
Based on these findings, focusing on machine learning or learning more about this specific branch of AI may be beneficial for those pursuing a career in AI.
